פרופ' לימור לנדסמן הצטרפה למחלקה לביולוגיה תאית והתפתחותית ב- 2012. היא קיבלה את תארי המוסמך והדוקטורט שלה ממכון ויצמן למדע ברחובות והכשרת הפוסט דוקטורט שלה התבצעה במרכז לסכרת של אוניברסיטת קליפורניה, סן פרנציסקו.
מחקרנו עוסק בתפקוד תאי בטא – תאים אלה מפרישים את ההורמון אינסולין, החשוב לבקרת רמת הסוכר בדם, ופגיעה בהם מובילה לסוכרת. קבוצת המחקר שלנו מנסה להבין כיצד פעילות תאי בטא מבוקרת באדם הבריא ומדוע היא נפגעת בחולה סוכרת. לצורך כך אנו מתמקדים בחקר האותות הסביבתיים הדרושים לתפקוד תאי בטא. מחקרנו הראה כי תאים פריציטים מבקרים הפרשה תקינה של אינסולין, ושינויים בתאים אלה בסוכרת תורמים לתפקוד לקוי של תאי בטא ושיבוש בקרת משק הסוכר. בנוסף, אנחנו חוקרים כיצד מתפתחים תאי הבטא בעוברים וילודים במטרה לקדם ריפוי תאי לסוכרת. תוך שימוש בעכברים מהונדסים גנטית, מעבדתינו חוקרת כיצד תאי הלבלב מתקשרים זה עם זה, ואיך תקשורת זו נפגעת בסוכרת.
